Niigaaniin Services is making strides to further help Community Members by providing services that don’t exist. We saw an increase in services needed for Community Members during the COVID-19 pandemic and made it a priority to integrate them into our organization. We are now seeing positive changes in surrounding communities. It is only the beginning of moving forward in a good way.
Staggering Statistics:
- In 2007/2008, indigenous adults in custody were 21% of provincial admissions and 20% in federal custody. In 2017/2018, these percentages rose to 30% in provincial admissions and 29% in federal custody.
- Indigenous women are the fastest-rising prison population in Canada. Indigenous women in prison rose 66% from 2007/2008 to 2017/2018.
- Indigenous men in prison increased by 28% from 2007/2008 to 2017/2018.
- The number of Indigenous Youth in correction services in 2007 was 26% and rose to 43% in 2017-2018.
